SOLARIS X86 SOLUTIONS
Syntax TotalNET Advanced Server for Solaris x86
TotalNET(TM) Advanced Server (TAS) network software products from
Syntax(TM), now available on SunSoft's Solaris(TM) x86 operating
environment, allow the integration of popular desktop computing
platforms into heterogeneous enterprise network configurations.
The TAS product family uses UNIX(R) systems as enterprise advanced
LAN servers, running UNIX processes such as databases,
communications gateways and network file systems.
TAS allows LAN Manager(TM), NetWare(R) and Macintosh(R) clients to
share data and resources through UNIX servers. TAS services
include file and printer sharing, administration, DOS archiving,
NetBIOS directory services, terminal emulation, security, and
advanced client/server options. The TAS components -- LMserver
Plus (for LAN Manager), NWserver (NetWare) and MACserver
(Macintosh) -- are designed to interoperate seamlessly through the
UNIX server.
Individual TAS components can be purchased separately to meet
specific configuration needs. They are ideal for small to medium
size enterprises wishing to connect LANs or PCs to a UNIX
application or communication server.
A Stable, Open Platform
Solaris x86 is a powerful and versatile UNIX operating environment
for the Intel(R) x86 platform. Designed as a foundation for
enterprise computing, it supports major industry standards and
provides high-performance 32-bit UNIX multitasking, multithreading
and multiuser capabilities. Solaris x86 is compatible with Solaris
SPARC(R), ensuring full interoperability between the leading CISC
(x86) and RISC (SPARC) platforms. And Solaris x86 is scalable from
desktops to supercomputers, so that customers can configure
heterogeneous enterprise networks and expand them easily as their
computing needs evolve.
Solaris x86 provides native ONC+(TM) technology-based LAN and WAN
networking to support broadly distributed computing and system
management. Solaris also includes powerful application and
Graphical User Interface (GUI) development tools through the
OpenWindows(TM) facility, and a rich suite of user productivity
applications under DeskSet(TM). Numerous commercial third-party
applications, including many Microsoft(R) Windows and DOS
applications, run on the Solaris x86 environment.
TotalNET Features and Benefits
* Multiple LAN servers on Solaris systems
provide resource sharing between client PCs operating as NetWare,
LAN Manager, Windows for Workgroups, NT, AppleShare(R), or peer-
to-peer LAN clients
* Multiple protocol support for IPX,
TCP/IP, NetBIOS, NetBEUI and AppleTalk on Solaris systems; allows
clients to address server functions using the preferred local
technology without need for changes to local PCs
* UNIX system compatibility allows TAS to
use UNIX file systems, security and file locking. DOS, Windows,
Macintosh and UNIX LAN client applications can access and share
UNIX processes including NFS(R) access, application software,
communications gateways and databases
* Scalable server environment for TAS
operates on UNIX systems from small desktops large multi-CPU
systems, in simple or highly complex configurations
* Global network administration of all
standard tasks, as well as tools for resource utilization,
resource availability and performance management functions
* Comprehensive terminal emulation to all
LAN client PCs for access to UNIX application servers. TAS SNA
gateway services provide access to legacy SNA systems via 3270,
5250 or other SNA methods
* Shared FAX server functions accommodate
incoming and outbound FAX processing; UNIX terminal users and LAN
clients can participate in the TAS facsimile network
* Remote printing services provide LAN
client PCs access to all network resources; PCs can share files
and printers whether they are attached to a dedicated network
server or to a client PC
* Industry standard API support includes
TCP/IP sockets, NetBIOS, DCE, common file system interfaces and
Named Pipes
* E-mail services allow clients to choose
their local mail software and still participate in enterprise
messaging functions
* Remote access services provide remote
office or telecommuting access to the enterprise network, with
complete functionality but with performance limited by the
selected communications link
* Data archival services allows PC data
archiving to UNIX server storage, assuring protection of critical
data stored throughout the enterprise
